“Greater Love Has No One Than This: To Lay Down One’s Life  For One’s Friends.” – John 15:13

February is the month when love becomes a sales pitch. More candy, flowers, and Hallmark cards will be sold during this month than at any other time of the year. But, how many people have taken time to really pray and reflect on what true love is? The sad truth is that many are seeking love but have no idea what authentic love looks like. Some have even been so disappointed that they’ve given up on true love completely and are settling for what they call, “friends with benefits.”

Did you know that the word threshold according to Webster’s means the entrance or beginning point of something? There is something about the New Year that brings excitement to every individual whether young or old. We spend the last few days of December setting goals and making New Year Resolutions. However,
if you are like most people, after the first few weeks of planning, the goals and resolutions have been broken.

PUTTING THE ‘HOLY’ BACK IN OUR HOLIDAY

You're probably aware that the word holiday is derived from Holy Day and was originally intended to set the day apart from ordinary days. It didn't just start recently. Actually, through the centuries, people have a tendency to lose focus on the significance of a particular day simply using it as an excuse to throw a party. Now, while there may be nothing wrong with throwing a party and even Jesus was known to frequent a few in his day, it is important to reclaim some of the HOLY in our holidays.

Right about now, you're probably saying to yourself; "There goes Pastor taking all the fun out of my day off." Well, actually I'm trying to suggest that our holidays can become even more meaningful and enjoyable if we focus on what; being holy during these days really means.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

Several weeks ago, I was channel surfing and came across the Video Music Awards on MTV.  As a pastor and a preacher, I understand the importance of staying familiar with cultural trends in-order to remain connected to my congregation and to be able to preach sermons that reach contemporary audiences. BET, MTV, and other youth oriented media offer illuminating glimpses into the cultural shifts taking place today. So, every parent, leader, and any Christian who takes their role seriously, as “salt in the earth,” ought to have some awareness of what our children (and adults) are into these days. Karl Barth said,

The Pastor and the Faithful should not deceive themselves into thinking that they are a religious society, which has to do with only certain themes; they live in the world. We still need both the Bible and the newspaper.” Today, he might add…and the remote control.

CONFESSIONS OF A CHURCH DROP OUT

It will surprise no one that as a pastor, I frequently have conversations with my members about a wide range of issues. However, what will surprise some is the fact that I often have conversations with non-church members as well. While I have encountered a few atheists and agnostics during my travels, most of the unchurched who I meet were at some point members of a church, but for a number of reasons they have dropped out.

SAY IT LOUD! I BELIEVE......

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the

Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead;

He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father

Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic Church; the communion of

saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting.

Amen.

From childhood I can recall standing with my mother and brothers in the sanctuary of our church and along with other family and friends rhythmically declaring what I believed as if I were giving an Easter recitation. It was seared into my memory and spoken from my naïve lips with little consideration to what it was I was affirming. These many years later, I stand in the same sanctuary each Sunday and make the same affirmation with about the same volume level but with a great deal more conviction that it is what I believe.

"Forgive Us Our Trespasses AS We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us." (Matt. 6:12)

Jesus gave his disciples instructions on the important elements of prayer and included a key principle concerning forgiveness. When we pray the Lord's Prayer, we tend to recite this phrase without pausing to carefully consider the profound implications of the words. In essence, we are inviting the Lord to treat us with regard to our sins, just like we treat those who've sinned against us. This is why forgiving is so important. Because, God knows that you and I will never really be healed; that we will never really move toward wholeness; that we will never really get on with our lives until we are able to let go of the resentment; until we can give up gaining revenge . . . and forgive.
